THE MUMMY

The current weekend: April 17 to 19, 2026 It's a quiet mid-April weekend before two big movies open back-to-back over the next two weeks: Michael and The Devil Wears Prada 2... 1) The Mummy opening - This is an original horror production that's unrelated to the swashbuckling action adventure series produced by Universal that ran from 1999 to 2017, starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, The Rock and later Tom Cruise. The opening is good for an original, single-episode horror film, at above average levels for the genre, in spite of lackluster critics' reviews and audience scores (a C+ CinemaScore). The weekend start is not on the level of a horror series launch: - The production budget was reasonable at around $25 million. Historically, these movies do not do well overseas - you can see it above. But even without strong foreign, the film should break even after all ancillary business finishes. 2) Normal opening - This is a soft opening for an indie crime thriller. These are small films and the weekend figure is somewhat below average. Critics' reviews are very good, but the audience score is flat (a C+ CinemaScore). International rights were sold regionally and on a market-by-market basis by William Morris Endeavor Independent. Distribution partners include Sky Cinema (UK), Metropolitan FilmExport (France), Leonine Studios (Germany), and Amazon MGM Studios (Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand). With the picture handled differently around the world, it's impossible to gauge what kind of success it will have abroad, but overall, we expect little theatrical business: 3) Where we are now - Super Mario and Project Hail Mary continue to drive the business in their 3rd and 5th weekends - they're carrying the box office. Michael, next week, is now tracking to open to around $75 million domestically, and it could go higher. Michael Jackson was a worldwide phenomenon, and his story is going to connect everywhere around the world.
