The current weekend: September 4 to 6, 2026 Labor Day weekend Kids are back in school, the vacation season is over, and autumn is here. September and the Labor Day holiday are traditionally sluggish at the box office - moviegoing is weakening... 1) By Any Means opening - This is a good opening for an original crime thriller. These are small films and there are a lot of them. The weekend figure is a bit above average for the genre. Critics' reviews are lukewarm but the audience score is very good (a B+ CinemaScore). Historically, foreign business for the genre is fair. The reported budget was under $30 million. Streamers spend $100m or more on mediocre crime thrillers; this one is cheap. These movies are dependable programmers on streaming and TV, and Mark Wahlberg has a strong track-record, so the picture should do well in ancillary businesses and break even there: 2) Onslaught opening This weekend's Onslaught section is for paid subscribers. Upgrade to get full access. Subscribe 3) Fall 2: Deadpoint opening - This movie is an outlier. Action adventure series are some of the biggest in the industry (you can see it in the table below). A sequel like this generally follows a hit, but Fall #1 finished with only $18 million worldwide in Aug 2022, on a tiny budget ($3 million). This opening is down from #1's start. Critics' reviews are lukewarm, with a fair audience score (a B- CinemaScore). These are very small numbers, but like last time, the production budget was tiny (an est. $3m), so the film should be profitable from streaming and TV distribution: 4) Where we are now - Summer is over. This weekend there's a quirk in the calendar that's also hurting the numbers: During 2019, 2018, 2017, and 2025, Labor Day came 1 week earlier, so this weekend we're comparing back to the weekend after Labor Day, which was stronger. It's no consolation. We're in a new season now, the lineup is turning over, and moviegoing is softening. We haven't had a down weekend like this in a long time: - Next weekend the box office will pick up with a very good opening from Practical Magic 2, starring Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bulloch, Maisie Williams and Joey King.
