The current weekend: August 14 to 16, 2026 1) PAW Patrol 3: The Dino Movie opening - PAW Patrol is a prolific Canadian animation franchise in its 13th season on television and spawning 10 films on TV, streaming, and theatrically (with video games, live shows and merchandise to boot). This is the third theatrical wide-release. Domestically, the movies are mid-level performers, but the budgets are reasonable (this one cost an est. $40 million) and the series does extremely well abroad. The film is approaching $50 million in two weekends overseas, and it hasn't opened everywhere yet. In North America, the start is below average for an animation episode 3, but average here includes the biggest family series in the history of the business. Critics' reviews are outstanding and kids love it (an A CinemaScore). PAW Patrol took a big step up last episode in Sept 2023. With strong foreign business, excellent ancillary potential, and at a modest cost, these are very good numbers**:** 2) The End of Oak Street opening - This is a solid opening for a sci-fi monster thriller, at roughly average levels for the genre. Critics' reviews are excellent, with a good audience score (a B CinemaScore). This is late summer escapist entertainment, but right now audiences are still escaping to Spider-Man, which is making an est. $67 million in its third weekend. Sci-fi monster movies perform well around the world - the spectacle of terrifying creatures is understood by all audiences in all markets. At a cost of $80 million, the picture isn't going to break even from theatrical income, but it should play well on streaming and TV and recover its costs after it finishes all businesses: 3) The Brink of War opening - This is a weak opening for a war drama. The weekend figure is below average for the genre. Critics' reviews are good-not-great, but audiences are completely on board - they gave it an A CinemaScore. The storyline is: "U.S. President Ronald Reagan races against time during the 1986 Reykjavík Summit in Iceland to reach a historic nuclear arms agreement with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev." Ronald Reagan remains a hero to many Americans, particularly on the right side of the political spectrum, and Angel Studios knows how to get this audience to the theater, but this title is not getting Angel's usual traction: 4) Where we are now - The box office generally slows during the second half of August as kids start returning to school, but right now business remains extremely strong. The weekend is well ahead of the pre-pandemic average and even farther ahead of last year. Spider-Man and The Odyssey are combining for around $90 million on their 3rd and 5th weekends, respectively (an est. $67 million and $23 million) - magnificent. And this weekend they're getting help from the new openers.
